Creation vs. Evolution Essay -- Science Debate Essays
Creation vs. Evolution Since the publication of Darwinââ¬â¢s Origin of Species in 1859, there has been a continuous debate in the United States regarding evolution and creation. Recently, this debate has intensified throughout America over the issue of whether or not to include creationism in the public school curriculum either in conjunction with evolution or as a replacement for the theory. With such a volatile subject being argued, there are other issues that are brought up at the same time. I find these side issues to the evolution/creation debate to be very perplexing. The many differing viewpoints that my friends, family, and the American public in general believe are incredibly interesting. There are varying strict ââ¬Å"either/orâ⬠views, and views that combine evolution and the Bibleââ¬â¢s story of creationism. There are diverse ideas where evolution and science can coexist with the Bible, and different commitment and intensity levels to these beliefs. The knowledge a nd familiarity, or lack thereof, that people have with both evolution and creationism is intriguing as well. The most interesting of these questions is the key motivation behind peopleââ¬â¢s opinions; are they were religiously based or is there something else? The evolution/creationism controversy has been progressing and remains a heated issue that strikes deep into the heart of peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs. The matter involves the different scientific and non-scientific theories about the origins and development of human beings, which drives to the core of human existence and their relationship with God. It is a personal issue for many, with family, relationships, faith, and morality at stake. Because it is such an individual choice as to what to believe i... ...aspx?oid=2095> [10] People for the American Way. (Research team assembled by Chairman Daniel Yankelovich.) 1 Feb. 2003. Human Nutrition Worksheet Essay
Use Ch. 1, 2, & 3 of Visualizing Nutrition, supplemental course materials, the University Library, the Internet, or other resources to answer the following questions. Your response to each question should be 75 to 100 words. 1. What is nutrition? Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives? Nutrition is the process in which the body takes in nutrients and distributes it through the body. These nutrients give the body energy and supplies the body with materials that help tissue growth and processes. Nutrition is also known as the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods. Nutrition is essential in our daily lives because it can dramatically affect the way the body functions. These nutrients are the bodyââ¬â¢s day to day source of fuel. 2. What is the connection between nutrition and health? Food is the main source for the bodyââ¬â¢s health and nutrition. Our health is based off of good nutrition. Without a healthy nutritious diet, not only is your physical health at risk, but you put your mental health at risk as well. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet can help to stimulate parts of the brain that causes depression and anxiety. It even helps to boost your energy level, thus helping you excel in most daily activities. 3. What is the relationship between poor nutrition and disease? Poor nutrition can be a result of not eating enough food, or not eating the right kind of food. Not eating enough or eating all the wrong kind of food canà lead the body to face health complications in the future. One complication the body faces with poor nutrition is diabetes. Diabetes can be caused by obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Anemia is another complication that the body faces when red blood cells are unable to carry enough oxygen to your bodyââ¬â¢s cells. This is caused by an iron deficiency. Some of the foods that contain iron can include: clams, oysters, liver, beef, poultry etc. 4. What does it mean to eat a balanced diet? Why is food choice important for good nutrition? A balanced diet means that the body is receiving the required portions from each food group from the food group pyramid. Food choice is important for good nutrition because it is up to the individual whether they chose to maintain a healthy life style by starting with what they eat. . A balanced diet is what is recommended in order to keep good health and healthy eating is what keeps the body healthy and strong. With poor choice in nutrition, the body can become vulnerable to disease and health complications in the future. 5. Why is physical activity important to a personââ¬â¢s health? What changes, if any, should you make to ensure you get enough physical activity? Physical activity is important to oneââ¬â¢s health because it helps to reduce chances of a disease, it helps people feel better both physically and mentally. Many changes can come from making small changes in a personââ¬â¢s lifestyle. Keeping fit can also lead to more energy throughout the day and can have a positive effect to a personââ¬â¢s social interaction. Promoting good health with good eating habits and daily physical activity will make aging a lot easier on the body; not to mention one will look great doing it! 6. What influences your food choices? Why? I believe what influences my food choices is the food marketing and advertisements made through billboards, flyers, television and even social media. Personally noticed the increase in the advertisement of fat foods like McDonaldââ¬â¢s, Carlââ¬â¢s Jr. Wendyââ¬â¢s, Jack in the Box and many more restaurants serving greasy foods. These foods are made at an affordable price and even available through drive troughââ¬â¢s to make it easier on theà consumers pocket and time. For me it is a lot easier to pick something up from a drive through, than to make the time to cook something healthy at home. 7. What is the difference between digesting protein and carbohydrates? Which would make you feel fuller longer? Why? Carbohydrates break down the sugars and starches of the food we eat. Our bodyââ¬â¢s then can use them as fuel. Proteins and fats can also be used as energy sources. Consuming carbs can offer the most direct way of supplying fuel to our bodyââ¬â¢s cells, while protein digestion can serve to reduce the large protein molecules in the foods you consume down to their individual building blocks, or amino acids. 8. How does todayââ¬â¢s society affect our nutritional habits? Todayââ¬â¢s society has a big impact on our nutritional habits due to all the advertising done for restaurants promoting unhealthy foods. Like I stated in question six, these restaurants are offering the buyers unhealthy food at affordable prices. Now a days, you donââ¬â¢t really see advertisement for health eating. The only restaurant that has somewhat of a healthy choice is Subway, but even then Subway has a lot of choices full of calories. In order to pick something healthy you have to read how many calories each item has and Subway has a calorie chart to look at for help. 9. How are nutrients used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP)? Adenosine triphosphate consists of carbohydrates and fats. Carbohydrates are the main source of ATP production. When carbs are broken down into glucose, they get stored in the muscles as glycogen. This then gets turned into ATP production. Fat is another fuel source that becomes of use when exercising. But in fat, you have the good fat and bad fat. Good fat energizes you to be less fatigued while working out, while bad fat has the opposite effects on the body. 10. Consider your personal dietary habits. What are some modifications you might make to promote good health? Considering my own dietary habits, I need to make healthier choices in order to reach a better state of health. Being pre diabetic means maintaining a healthier lifestyle along with more physical activity to burn off calories and set a goal of losing weight and staying fit. I need to start making healthier food choices rather than taking the easy way out and head for the drive through. Cooking meals a day before or taking one day to cook for the week can make time more manageable and help to make the change and keep up a healthy lifestyle.

Recommendation Report Free Essays
MEMORANDUM DATE: 26 September 2011 TO: Muhammad Ali, CEO of Paintball Unlimited Pte Ltd FROM: Phoebe Soh, Supervisor for construction of new premise PROGRESS ON CONSTRUCTION OF INDOOR PAINTBALL ARENA AT LOT 25, JUSCO IPOH As requested, we are sending you the second monthly progress report on the developments of the construction of Paintball Unlimited 2. After overcoming some initial problems, we are making good progress on the construction of our new premise in Lot 25, Jusco Ipoh. Past Progress During the past two months, we firstly finalized the estimated budget of our new project, the construction of Paintball Unlimited 2 at Lot 25, Jusco Ipoh. We will write a custom essay sample on Recommendation Report or any similar topic only for you Order Now The estimated budget is at RM2. 0 ââ¬â RM2. 5 million. We managed to secure the zoning approval to open up the premise. On confirming the location of the new premise, Lot 25 in Jusco Ipoh, which covers an area of 30,000 sq ft, we secured a two-year contract for the lease of the premise which will cost us RM240, 000 and will be paid in monthly installments of RM10, 000. Next, we hired Flooring Pte Ltd to construct the flooring required for the different sections of our premise. Painters Pte Ltd was then hired to repaint the premise as the old paint coat was peeling. The lighting for our indoor arena was contracted to Lighting Pte Ltd. However there was a three-week delay in the installation of the wall lighting which led to a delay in the painting of certain sections of the walls. We also ordered 5 thousand T-shirts, caps and key chains each, designed by Nickly Pte Ltd. as a paintball keepsake. Current Progress We have started on the construction of the 4 sections of our arena which will be called ââ¬ËDesert Stormââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËBoggy Swampââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËJungle Safariââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËNight Opsââ¬â¢. These names reflect the environment that customers will be playing in. It will be done up in such a way that it will simulate the actual conditions of the places mentioned. Desert Storm Progress on this section has been halted due to some unexpected delays. The design for this section includes obstacles such as statues of camels and 3 tons of sand for sand dunes, all of which we received before the due date. We are also constructing a mini swimming pool that will be done up to resemble an oasis. However, the delay was in the procuring of the artificial cacti. This is because the company we ordered the products from is currently facing a law suit to which the outcome is uncertain to us. Besides that, the blower we ordered from General Electric to create sandstorms is currently out of stock and the company was unable to confirm a delivery date. Therefore, further completion of this section is currently being put on hold and progress on the other 3 sections of the arena has begun. Boggy Swamp Progress on this section of the arena is going smoothly. The fittings and the equipment such as the artificial mud, plastic mangrove trees and animals, plus other similar objects have arrived and are currently being installed. We are also in talks with the manufacturer of those products to see if we can obtain its latest product which is a type of clay which releases an odour similar to that of a swamp to enhance the experience for future customers. However, we are not able to estimate the cost of the product and therefore do not know whether it will be within our budget. Jungle Safari Progress on this section of the arena has faced some difficulties. Some of the products that we have purchased for this section have been found to be defective. For example, the plastic trees that we have ordered been found to have large cracks in the structures and look very flimsy. Therefore, we have doubts on whether it will be able to withstand the impact of the shots from the paintball guns. We have brought up this issue to the manufacturer but have been unsuccessful in obtaining a response from them. Besides that, some of the construction workers have been absent for a few days, slowing down the completion of this section. The contractor has projected a delay of up to two weeks due to this problem. However, he has been unable to provide a reason as to why his workers have not been turning up for work. Night Ops Progress on this section of the arena has encountered no problems thus far. The construction of the pillars and structures has been going according to plan and this section should be completed on time. However, there is a suggestion from the interior decorator to apply fluorescent paint on the obstacles and portions of the wall to make it more attractive and increase its appeal to potential customers. We feel it is a good suggestion and have contacted our appraiser to check if it is within our budget. Overall progress has been relatively smooth. The installation of air conditioners for the whole premise is going according to plan and is expected to be completed on time. The audio visual system that we are currently installing is also on schedule. However, there have been some unexpected increases in the prices of some of the equipment for the audio system, causing an increase in our overall cost and this will affect our estimated budget. Advertising of Our Project We are currently aggressively advertising the opening of the new paintball arena. Among the methods we are using are advertising through The Star newspaper. Our advertisement will start on December 3rd 2011 and will run daily for 6 weeks. We have contacted advertising experts from Advert Pte Ltd to design the advertisement for us and the design they showed us was more than satisfactory, thus we have chosen to use their sample. Besides that, we have assigned one of our employees to open up an official Facebook page for our project. It is currently being worked on and we have yet to see the final result. We have also contacted Dewan Bandaraya Ipoh to put up billboards for us at the Stadium roundabout and the Hospital roundabout for 6 months starting from December 1st 2011 to June 1st 2012. Besides that, we also contacted Voxel to put up an advertisement for us on their digital billboards to run concurrently with our others billboard advertisements. We feel that these locations are very strategic as a lot of people pass these areas. The design for the billboard is also under the same team that is designing our newspaper advertisement. However, they have yet to submit a design for us to review. Besides that, Jusco has agreed to include an announcement on the opening of our new arena in its monthly catalogue. Future Progress In the future, we plan to hire several employees to manage our completed arena. We have decided on â⬠¢ Supervisor (1 person) â⬠¢ Counter staff (2 persons) â⬠¢ Instructors ( 4 persons) â⬠¢ Referees ( 4 persons) â⬠¢ First Aiders ( 2 persons) â⬠¢ Cleaners (5 persons) As for the instructors and referees, we plan to send them for training should their knowledge on the subject of paintball be insufficient. We also plan to purchase the equipment needed for our arena. (Refer to appendix). The actual number of units will be decided on at a future date. Besides that, we are going to follow up on all the problems that have occurred in the construction of the site and make sure they are rectified. Once we are near completion, we will be able to provide an official launching date and send the company an estimate of our 1st yearââ¬â¢s profit. We will also design a vision and mission statement for our arena based on the values of our company. D Vietnam free essay sample
While writing this letter, it triggers memories, and the audience is then thrown into Walters life growing up as a kid, showing the hard times of growing up as an African-American in a segregated Birmingham, Alabama. Throughout the book, you come upon a few scenario changes. Grooms could be explaining to you about the marches downtown in deep detail in one chapter, only to switch to a gun fight in the muddy jungles of Vietnam in the next. I can agree and somewhat disagree with the style Grooms choose to use. Starting out the book in Vietnam set up the whole entire story. Without the Vietnam stories, you wouldnt get a true sense of Walters personality, as well as his bad and good memories growing up as a child. Switching between Vietnam and his childhood showed you that Walter had had somewhat of a soft spot for talking about his childhood, and that it changed him as a person. We will write a custom essay sample on D Vietnam or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When reading this book, I appreciated the fact that Grooms wrote like this just because it made you develop a stronger relationship with Walter as a person, seeing that he was trying to be a good person and write to Haywoods parents, but at the same time be reminded of a troubled past. I can see why some people might be taken back by the style Grooms uses, just because it is so different. But the way that he wrote it showed the readers a different aspect of most civil rights stories or Vietnam stories. He explained the story as someone right there, experiencing it all, and telling the tale. Im sure Grooms could have taken a different approach to the story. But then again, if you actually got into the story, I dont feel like it should have been that big of a deal. Responsibility plays a big part in this book. Walter had many decisions to make at a very young age, and it helped shape is as a man. Grooms did an amazing job of showing how Walters decisions affected not only himself, but the people he loved the most. You almost want to choose sides while reading this book. I often found myself asking ââ¬Å"Should Walter really do that? â⬠Knowing how Walters family feels about the marches, and knowing that Walters mom, on her death bed, disagrees with them. This a lmost makes you want to question Walter and his decisions to march with Lamar. I think the reason that Walter decided to join Lamar on the marches was because he wanted to make a change in the world. He saw himself as just a person. Color didnt matter to him, as it did to the outside world. He knew his parents were against the marches, and I think him knowing why inspired him to be a part of the movement. He didnt want to sit back in the shadows, he wanted to embrace his race. Not live a life where he would always be looked down upon. He wanted change. At one point in the story, Lamar, Walter, and Josie get into an argument. Walter makes a statement saying ââ¬Å"You have been living in the projects to long. Lamar kind of takes it to heart and responds back to him saying ââ¬Å"Well, you are not as rich as you think you are,â⬠and ââ¬Å"yall Burkes think you are so much better than everyone else, but you are not, you are nothing but colored. â⬠I personally felt like this was a very important argument. In a sense Lamar is right, they were not anything in their society at the time but ââ¬Å"colored. â⬠The Burke family lived in a nice segregated suburb. Walters mo m was an accountant. Walters dad was a high school science teacher. This sort of lifestyle that the Burke family lived made me think. Did the Burke family just try to fit in? Knowing the whole time they were looked down upon. Lamar and his mom embraced the way society treated them, and tried to make a difference, instead of sitting back, not knowing what would happen each day, like the Burkes. Living in the most segregated state in the country at the time could not have been easy for any African-American. Grooms explains this living experience from a different point then most books or articles you will read. He tells you about someone living in it first hand, letting you somewhat experience and reflect on their struggles.
